October 23rd - 27th What Did Students Do? Students have been working on their reading comprehension strategies in different ways. In our class read aloud of the book Wonder , students have focused on making connections that include text to self and text to text. Then, students focused on making predictions by synthesizing information from their background knowledge, personal experiences, and clues from the text. We discuss these comprehension strategies in whole class and small group discussions. Students also record their connections and predictions in their Reading Response Journals. In addition, during small reading groups, students have improved their comprehension by learning about and identifying a variety of text features that communicate information, such as images, captions, pictures, glossaries, bolded words, etc. They read a booklet on Grasslands, related to our Social Studies curriculum, and identified different text features and how these features helped them with th...

October 10th - 13th What Did Students Do? We started off the week by reflecting on what gratitude means. Then we read a book called The Grateful Book by Angela Kohler. Students then brainstormed what they are grateful for in their lives and created a web. Following this, students learned the structure of a paragraph and why it is like a hamburger! They were introduced to the important elements of a paragraph, focusing on a topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence. Students looked at examples of topic sentences and created examples of some with partners. Then they chose one they would like to use for their paragraph and wrote it down on a template. Students then wrote three to five sentences for their supporting details. Finally, students learned the purpose of a concluding sentence, practiced writing some with a partner, then added their own to their paragraph on the provided template. To end this process, students created a checklist which helped them to revise...
