What Did Students Do?

We started off the week by reflecting on what gratitude means. Then we read a book called The Grateful Book by Angela Kohler. Students then brainstormed what they are grateful for in their lives and created a web. Following this, students learned the structure of a paragraph and why it is like a hamburger! They were introduced to the important elements of a paragraph, focusing on a topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence. Students looked at examples of topic sentences and created examples of some with partners. Then they chose one they would like to use for their paragraph and wrote it down on a template. Students then wrote three to five sentences for their supporting details. Finally, students learned the purpose of a concluding sentence, practiced writing some with a partner, then added their own to their paragraph on the provided template. To end this process, students created a checklist which helped them to revise and edit their work to ensure they included the necessary paragraph parts, capitals and punctuation, descriptive language, and accurate spelling of high-frequency words. The final step will be publishing their work.
