April 22nd - April 26th ** Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the students' Minecraft Celebration of Learning. The students were so excited to share with you! ** English Language Arts and Literature Our celebration was a wonderful example of how literacy has been embedded throughout our Minecraft task. While working on this process, students used their reading strategies, writing skills, and oral communication.  I can demonstrate how speaking and listening support connections and clarify understanding. Questions: Share what you are proud of after your Minecraft Celebration of Learning. Mathematics Students spent the week refining their understanding of the concept of area. They practiced finding the area of rectangles using multiplication. They ended the week by applying their understanding of how to solve for area to a problem solving task, choosing between mild, medium, or spicy. April 15th - 18th English Language Arts Reading: This week, we finished our class read aloud of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We had great conversations about the text as we read this novel. Next week, students will create a one-pager reflection, focusing on what they enjoyed, their personal connections, predictions they made, major and minor characters, and the lesson of the story. Students also continued reading novels in their small reading groups. A few groups have finished their first novel and moved onto a new one. I can use strategies and make connections to support my comprehension. Questions:  How did Edward Tulane end? Who are some of the major and minor characters? What novel are you reading in your small group?  Writing: Students continued with their Minecraft challenge. They finished their build and then wrote speeches explaining each element of it. April 8th - 12th English Language Arts Social Studies Students researched another region of Alberta this week: The Boreal Forest! They pulled key information while doing their independent reading. They highlighted what they thought was important and put it into jot notes. Then, as a class we compared information. Finally, each child chose one feature to represent on our class map. I can research and share my findings through visual representations I can access information to expand my knowledge. I can examine the geographical and natural vegetation regions, landforms, and bodies of water in Alberta. Questions: What region did you study this week? Why is it called the Boreal Forest? Tell me some important information about this region. Math Students started working with area this week. They measured the area of certain shapes using any non-standard unit they could think of.
