Students researched another region of Alberta this week: The Boreal Forest! They pulled key information while doing their independent reading. They highlighted what they thought was important and put it into jot notes. Then, as a class we compared information. Finally, each child chose one feature to represent on our class map.
  • I can research and share my findings through visual representations
  • I can access information to expand my knowledge.
  • I can examine the geographical and natural vegetation regions, landforms, and bodies of water in Alberta.
Questions: What region did you study this week?
Why is it called the Boreal Forest?
Tell me some important information about this region.

Math

Students started working with area this week. They measured the area of certain shapes using any non-standard unit they could think of. Then, we talked about the pros and cons of non-standard units of measurement and why standard units are helpful. Students then brainstormed standard units of measurement they already know. Finally, students determined the area of certain shapes and then created their own shapes given a specific area.
  • I can interpret and express area.
Questions: What is area?
What non-standard units of measurement did you use to find the area of shapes around the room?
What standard unit of measurement did you use to find the area of shapes drawn in your journal?

Science

Students continued with their decomposition experiment. They noticed changes in how their fruit/veggie has decomposed since their last observation. They also compared the rate of decomposition of their fruit/veggie to their classmates'. They recorded things they noticed and wonder. They also reflected back on their hypothesis to see if it was correct or not. We took this learning opportunity outside!
  • I can identify plant wastes, and describe how they are recycled in nature. I can observe how they are broken down by decomposers, such as molds, fungi and bacteria.
Questions: What did you notice about your fruit/veggie?
How do things decompose? What is the process?
Is your hypothesis turning out to be correct? Why or why not?
