September 25th - 28th What Did Students Do? Students continued their learning around Truth and Reconciliation Week, where we honoured Every Child Matters and Orange Shirt Day. As a class, we read the story When We Were Alone. Then students discussed the different aspects of children's lives that they were not allowed to practice at residential schools. They noted family, clothing, hair, food, and more. Students then shared one in their visual journals through sentences and pictures. Then, students categorized these ideas and filled in the following blank "We want all children's _______ to be respected and appreciated." They shared their idea on a whole class orange shirt that was displayed along with one from every class to complete a school puzzle. Finally, students worked on observing, wondering, and inferring when looking at the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Week graphic. Students recorded their observations, things they wondered, and ideas they infer...

September 18th - 22nd Thank you! Thank you for attending Meet the Teacher Conferences on Thursday and Friday. It was wonderful to meet you and to learn more about your child. What Did Students Do? September 22nd was Treaty 7 Day. Students learned that on this day, Treaty 7 was signed. Throughout the week, students shared their prior knowledge and learned more about the land. First, they fine tuned their understanding of what a treaty is. Then, they looked at a map of Alberta and identified the Treaties and Regions of our province. Next, we said the Land Acknowledgement and discussed its significance. Students recognized that the Land Acknowledgment is "to honour Mother Earth and the original care takers of the land." After discussing the Land Acknowledgement students looked at the significance of the land in their own lives. They created a web exploring their favourite place to be, what they enjoy doing, and who they like to be with on the land. Finally, they identified way...

September 11th - 15th  What Did Students Do? Students continued their work around the school-wide text "The Power of One". After reading the story, students discussed what they thought its meaning is. As a class, we decided it means that one little small act of kindness can make a big difference. Then students brainstormed ways they can show kindness in our classroom community. Students worked in groups to categorize their examples based on similarities. After this, we discussed respect, collaboration, and empathy which are focuses in our grade four curriculum. Students tried their best to come up with definitions for these words in partners. Then, we sat in a circle and each partnership shared what they thought the words meant. As each person shared, the others listened carefully and could add or change their own ideas. After everyone had a chance to share their thoughts, students created their definitions for the words "respect, collaboration", and "empathy...

It has been a great start up to the school year. As a class, we worked on getting to know one another, building relationships, and establishing routines. What did students do? In their table groups, students completed the Marshmallow Challenge. For this challenge, they worked as a team to design and build the tallest free standing structure from some spaghetti sticks, tape, and string. Then they placed one whole marshmallow on top. After this task, students completed a reflection based on their experience in the group.
