December 11th - 15th
Thank You
Thank you to our amazing volunteers who were able to join us on the field trip to Fort Calgary. It was a fantastic trip where students learned a lot and had a great time.
Learning Outcomes - Social Studies
I can recognize how stories of people and events provide multiple perspectives on past and
present events.
I can demonstrate respect for places and objects of historical significance.
I can think about the stories of Indigenous people and what these tell us about their beliefs regarding the
relationship between people and the land?
What Did Students Do?
The grade fours went on an exciting field trip to Fort Calgary. They started the day by looking at a model of the layers of soil and the interesting things you would find in each layer. They discussed what each item meant in regards to our historical timeline. Then they discussed the similarities and differences between paleontology and archaeology. In the end, they determined that paleontology and artifacts both share stories about our past. Following this, students did an archaeology excavation. They used a paintbrush to brush away dirt to reveal different artifacts. They measured the artifacts and then determined the group of people they think these artifacts belonged to. In the afternoon, students played a variety of Indigenous games that have been played for generations and encourage cooperation, concentration, strength, and endurance. The kids had so much fun learning and playing! Then we went on a museum tour. Lastly, we were fortunate to have beautiful weather which allowed us to venture outside to experience the natural parkland at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Then students got to visit The Metis House which is Calgary's oldest building still standing in its original site (built in 1876). It has been fully restored and is one of Fort Calgary's most important permanent artifacts. Students also got to see The Deane House which is full of history. The students had a great time getting to and from the field trip on the bus and participating in the different programs while there!
