December 18th - 22nd

It has been a very exciting week in grade four! The students did some excellent learning and also had fun performing at the concert and participating in the spirit week.

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the concert. The students did a fantastic job in the afternoon and evening concerts!

Happy Holidays to all of you! I hope you have a happy, safe, and healthy winter break! I look forward to seeing the students back on January 8th.

What Did Students Do?

Language Arts and Social Studies

Students have been working hard on their fossil task. This task connects our Language Arts and Social Studies curriculums. They have been focusing a lot on text features during small reading groups and this knowledge was applied to the fossils task. First, they started by using a variety of reading strategies to pull information from text about fossils. They synthesized this information and recorded it in jot notes. Then, they took this information and put it into their own writing, following the paragraph structure. They assessed their work using a rubric and edited and revised it. Finally, they published their work in a slideshow which included their writing and other text features, such as images, captions, and definitions.

Math

Students have been working with decimal numbers to the hundredths. With this, they have been working with money. They have also been practicing their addition and extended their understanding to addition with decimals. For this task, students were "given" a certain amount of money to spend on a book order. They had certain types of books they needed to include and the rest was up to them. They were asked to get as close to their total as possible, without going over. To start this, students rounded and estimated their totals. Then they found the accurate sum.

Winter Solstice

Students spent the day of Winter Solstice connecting to the land out in our learning grounds. They watched a video by Elder Saa'kokoto about the solstice where they learned that one way to show appreciate to the land is by "being wisely mindful" -aokakio'siit in Blackfoot. To do this, students went outside and formed a circle. One student read the land acknowledgement to start the time outside. Then, students practiced being mindful in a sit spot. They focused on using their senses to be present. After some time, they reflected in their journal about the things they felt, heard, and saw while being on the land.
