February 20th-23rd English Language Arts I can independently read using strategies and making connections to help my comprehension. I can investigate how figurative language is used in imaginative ways. I can expand my vocabulary by including phrases with personification. We started a new read aloud, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane . As we started this text, students used a variety of strategies, including visualizing, predicting, making connections, and asking questions. During students small reading group times, they started new novels of their choice. Students did a great job reading together as a group, using a variety of strategies. In writing, students focused on using personification to make their writing even more descriptive and engaging. Questions: What do you think will happen on the ship in Edward Tulane? February 12th-14th It has been a great week in grade four! There was lots of learning and a wonderful celebration of friendship on Valentine's Day. This long weekend, I hope you get to spend time together as a family enjoying what you love. Science I can identify plant and animal wastes, and describe how they are recycled in nature. After learning about the different methods of disposal here in Calgary, students started to think about nature. They learned how waste in nature gets recycled and doesn't pile up. Then, students learned about how organisms form interconnected cycles. They wrote and drew their understanding in their visual journals. The students made great connections and asked wonderful connections throughout this learning. Questions : What are the three types of organisms you learned about? (producer, consumer, decomposer) What is an example of a producer? consumer? decomposer? How is energy transferred from a producer to consumer to decomposer?

February 5th - 9th Math I can solve problems using addition and subtraction, including problems involving money. Wellness I can persevere by continuing with a difficult task for a period of time. Students worked very hard on math problems this week! After looking at pictures of themselves cross country skiing down a hill and attempting tricks on rollerblades, students were reminded that they can take steps to do hard things! They were reminded to focus on this while completing math problems. This week, they certainly took steps to do hard things in math. They demonstrated perseverance and resilience, as well as collaboration. The students worked to solve mild, medium, and spicy problems. They used different strategies to determine their solutions. After solving the problems, students were given time to share how they solved the problems. While listening to their peers, a lot of students had "a-ha" moments where they realized what steps they could take next to more accurately...
