February 20th-23rd
English Language Arts
- I can independently read using strategies and making connections to help my comprehension.
- I can investigate how figurative language is used in imaginative ways.
- I can expand my vocabulary by including phrases with personification.
We started a new read aloud, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. As we started this text, students used a variety of strategies, including visualizing, predicting, making connections, and asking questions. During students small reading group times, they started new novels of their choice. Students did a great job reading together as a group, using a variety of strategies. In writing, students focused on using personification to make their writing even more descriptive and engaging.
Questions: What do you think will happen on the ship in Edward Tulane?
What novel are you reading in your small group? Tell me about it!
Can you give me an example of personification?
Mathematics
- I will multiply natural numbers within 10 000.
Students completed a pre-assessment this week to demonstrate their prior knowledge around multiplication. Then they used a few tools to play some math games as a start to multiplication. Moving forward, we will continue to focus on the skill of multiplication and how to apply it in problem-solving contexts.
Questions: Do you know how to use a number line to show 3 x 5?
How would you show 3 x 5 using counters?
What are you looking forward to when learning multiplication?
Science
- I can ask questions that lead to exploration and investigation and then identify possible answers to questions by stating a hypothesis
- I can identify plant waste and how it is recycled in nature.
Students worked through the beginning of The Scientific Method this week. After learning about recycling, garbage, and composting, students started to investigate decomposition. To do this, they asked a class question that they would like to learn more about. Then, they determined a plan to find the solution. To do this, they chose a fruit or vegetable and put it in some soil. They made a hypothesis and will gather data through observations over the next four weeks.
Questions: What does it mean to "decompose"?
What is a hypothesis? What is yours?
What fruit or vegetable did you choose to watch the process of decomposition? Why?
Physical Education and Wellness
- I can engage in a variety of physical activities that develop different components of physical fitness (snowshoeing).
- I can persevere by finding ways to continue to improve my skills during difficult situations (robotics)
What a great week for PE and Wellness! Students were amazing big buddies to their Kinder buddies. They helped them get their snowshoes on and then enjoyed snowshoeing with them out on the field. It was a beautiful day to be out enjoying this activity together. With the support of Mr. Newman, students were introduced to robotics, using Lego Mindstorm. Students built their robot following specific instructions and then started basic programming. They worked hard on problem solving together with their partner and persevering through challenges. The grade fours will continue with this exciting challenge next week.
Questions: Tell me about your robot! What were you able to get your robot to do?
Did you have fun snowshoeing with your buddy?
How did you help your buddy?
