Physical Education

What a wonderful week to be experiencing cross country skiing! The Ski at School Program was fantastic. Students learned a lot, persevered, and had a great time! Following our three days of skiing, three students led our class on a comic creating lesson and then students documented their skiing experience through creating their own comic. 
  • I can participate in a variety of physical activities that develop different components of physical fitness.





English Language Arts and Literacy

In reading groups this week, students read poems and discussed them. They also identified similes within each poem. Then, they thought about themselves and brainstormed ideas they would include in a poem. Finally, during their writing time, they wrote a poem all about themselves, including similes.
  • I can investigate figurative language used in imaginative ways. 
  • I can examine how a variety of poetic devices contribute to creatively sharing ideas.
  • I can use figurative language in my writing.
**Ask your child to show you their My Poem in Google Docs. They wrote beautiful poems including a variety of similes. **

Mathematics

Students applied their understanding of subtraction to decimal numbers. They worked hard to line numbers up according to place value and to line up the decimals. They also learned to use the inverse operation to ensure their answers were correct. They chose mild, medium, or spicy questions to answer and continued to challenge themselves. Following this, students applied their understanding of concepts to an open-ended problem solving question involving two bear cubs.
  • I can subtract numbers, including decimal numbers, using standard algorithms.









Science

After having explored artifacts at Fort Calgary, students examined an interesting piece of artwork that was there on display. This artwork showed a variety of pieces of garbage found on the grounds of Fort Calgary in 2023. This led students to a discussion about different methods of disposal. They spent the week exploring the process of recycling.
  • I can identify and classify wastes that result from human activity and how they are disposed of within Calgary.
  • I can describe alternative methods of disposal.

 October 16th - 19th  What Did Students Do? Students have spent the last few weeks being fantastic scientists. We have done a lot of work around the science topic: Plant Growth and Changes. Students have spent a lot of time outside noticing different aspects of plants and their changes. January 22nd - 26th English Language Arts and Literature  Social Studies  This week, students had the privilege of having Knowledge Keeper, Hal Eagletail, come to our class to share his knowledge with us. Prior to his visit, students learned protocols in place to honour and respect Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Then, students focused on listening to Hal Eagletail's teachings. During his time with us, Hal Eagletail taught students many things and left us with the message to get out on the land and "get dirty!" Following our time together, students went onto the land and explored the learning grounds. Many of them certainly got dirty! Then, they spent time reflecting on the teachings they had learned in a sit spot. Finally, students completed a one-pager sharing their take-aways from their time with Knowledge Keeper, Hal Eagletail. April 15th - 18th English Language Arts Reading: This week, we finished our class read aloud of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We had great conversations about the text as we read this novel. Next week, students will create a one-pager reflection, focusing on what they enjoyed, their personal connections, predictions they made, major and minor characters, and the lesson of the story. Students also continued reading novels in their small reading groups. A few groups have finished their first novel and moved onto a new one. I can use strategies and make connections to support my comprehension. Questions:  How did Edward Tulane end? Who are some of the major and minor characters? What novel are you reading in your small group?  Writing: Students continued with their Minecraft challenge. They finished their build and then wrote speeches explaining each element of it.
