English Language Arts

For reading this week, students continued focusing on different strategies in their small groups, while reading their novels. They worked hard on clarifying words and phrases in the text.

  • I can use strategies to support my text comprehension.
Questions: Summarize what happened in your novel this week.
Did you learn any new vocabulary words or the meaning of a saying from your book?
Predict what you think will happen next!

Writing

In writing, students continued to develop their understanding of figurative language and types of poems. In groups, they used our vertical surfaces to discover alliteration within a variety of poems. Then, they focused on using alliteration in their own concrete poems.
  • I can investigate figurative language used in imaginative ways.
  • I can experiment with creating concrete poetry.
Questions: What is alliteration? Can you give me an example?
What did you write your concrete poem about?

Mathematics

Students worked on their understanding of multiplication this week. They focused on recalling facts (10 x numbers and 2 x numbers) through learning new games. They also learned how to multiply 2 and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. The grade fours were then given problems that were solved incorrectly and they worked to figure out what the errors were. Next week, the students will work on applying these skills in problem solving contexts.
  • I can recall multiplication number facts.
  • I can multiply 3-digit natural numbers by 1-digit natural numbers using standard algorithms.
Questions: What is 10 x 3? What is 10 x 6? What is 2 x 4? What is 2 x 7?
How would you multiply 26 x 4? What about 375 x 3?

Science

This week, students continued with their studying of Waste in Our World. They shared a lot of great ways that they are already minimizing the amount of waste they produce and learned a few more.
  • I can identify alternative materials and processes that may decrease the amount of waste produced.
  • I can identify ways in which materials can be reused or recycled, including things I have done.
Questions: What are some ways to reuse or recycle materials?
What are some ways the amount of waste produced can be decreased?
