English Language Arts

Students reflected on their learning throughout the Minecraft process. They reflected on what they enjoyed, challenges they faced, and how they persevered. They shared their learning through writing and drawing.

The grade fours checked in by writing a letter, incorporating the different elements of writing they have learned this year. They included skills, such as complete sentences, appropriate punctuation, paragraphs, descriptive words, figurative language, and editing and revising.
  • I can incorporate text features to support a purpose.
  • I can create written texts for a variety of purposes.
  • I can write in a logical order by grouping ideas into paragraphs.
  • I can revise and edit.
Questions: What ideas did you include in your letter?
What did you edit and revise in your writing?

Mathematics

Students began exploring fractions and equivalent fractions. They built fractions, coloured fractions, and wrote fractions. Through their work, they discovered how fractions can be equivalent.
  • I can model equivalent fractions by partitioning a whole in multiple ways.
  • I can determine fractions equivalent to a given fraction.
Questions: What is a fraction?
What might be equivalent to the fraction 1/2?

Science

Students had the wonderful opportunity to have an in-class presentation about our topic of study, Light and Shadow. Thank you to our fantastic volunteers who made this opportunity possible. Through hands-on experiences, students explored the concepts of transparent/translucent/opaque materials, types of lenses, light spectrum, and reflection/refraction. After this presentation, students shared their learning through a visual journal page.
  • I can classify materials as transparent, partly transparent (translucent) or opaque.
  • I can recognize that light can be bent (refracted) and that such objects as aquaria, prisms and lenses can be used to show that light beams can be bent.
  • I can recognize that light can be broken into colours and that different colours of light can be combined to form a new colour.
  • I can recognize that light can be reflected and that shiny surfaces, such as polished metals and mirrors, are good reflectors.
Questions: Can you give me examples of things that are transparent, translucent, and opaque?
What does refracted mean?
Tell me about the light spectrum.
What was your favourite part of your Lights and Shadow presentation?
