Reading:
We started a new read aloud this week that students are very excited about. It is The City of Ember. Prior to beginning the novel, students looked at the cover and read the back of the book. Then, they made a prediction about who the characters might be, what the setting would look like, and what events might happen.
Learning Outcomes
I can examine how making, modifying, or confirming predictions supports text comprehension.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child
What do you think will happen in your new read aloud?
Writing:
Thank you for supporting your child with ideas to include in the timeline of their life. They had a lot of great ideas for our writing task. After creating a timeline, students chose one event to write a story about. Prior to writing about their event, they learned four strategies to create interesting story beginnings, which are sound, dialogue, thought/question, and action. Then, they were given an "okay" story beginning about camping and worked in a group to rewrite it using the interesting strategies. The final step was to use one of the interesting story beginnings to write about one event on their timeline.
Learning Outcomes
I can create non-fiction text, including an autiobiography.
I can develop my creative expression through a range of sentence types.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child
What event did you choose to write about?
Which interesting beginning did you use?
Math:
Students continued exploring equivalent fractions. They worked with visuals, as well as numbers. They learned that whatever you multiplied the numerator by, you also need to multiply the denominator by. Students also ordered fractions. Finally, they were given a new mystery to solve through math.
Learning Outcomes
I can determine fractions equivalent to a given fraction.
I can compare and order fractions.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child

Can you show me what an equivalent fraction to 2/3 could be?
